The Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty (AZ-140) validates the ability to plan, deliver, manage, and monitor virtual desktop experiences and remote apps on Azure using Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). It is the dedicated certification for desktop virtualization specialists transitioning from on-premises VDI to cloud-hosted virtual desktops.
The exam covers five domains: Plan an AVD Architecture (10–15%), Implement an AVD Infrastructure (25–30%), Manage Access and Security (10–15%), Manage User Environments and Apps (20–25%), and Monitor and Maintain an AVD Infrastructure (20–25%). Key topics include host pool deployment, session host sizing and configuration, FSLogix profile containers, MSIX app attach, RemoteApp, Golden Image management, Conditional Access for AVD, and Azure Monitor Workbooks for AVD.
The AZ-140 is a niche but valuable certification for IT professionals in organizations deploying AVD at scale, particularly those with hybrid Active Directory environments. AZ-104 and AZ-700 knowledge is strongly recommended as pre-study, since AVD deployments rely heavily on Azure networking and identity configurations.
